  • Indian Railways to order 1,000 electric locomotives

    Bids are to be invited soon by Indian Railways (IR) for an eight-year contract to manufacture 1,000 electric locomotives, and then to maintain them for 20 years. The winner of the contract will be provided with a site to build a factory in Madhepura. IR will have a minority stake in the new business. IR estimates it will need about 1,800 new locomotives during the next five years, but Chittaranjan Locomotive Works can only produce 150 locomotives a year, although production is being stepped up to 200 units a year.
